Valentine Strawberry Pickin'

Those of you who know G, know that he is quite the fan of strawberries...You may even recall the more than one occasion where we have discovered him on the floor of his closet after having eaten an entire pint of strawberries. So, one can only imagine the excitement to this 4-year-old when we told him that we were off to pick strawberries...and that he could eat ALL he wanted! No doubt, this is his heaven! At first we were really ticked that this was takin' so stinkin' long! He had clearly envisioned that we would walk through the gate and there would be nothing but strawberries. This walking to the field did not suit him.It was as if we had let him in a candy store! His mood changed dramatically! It was a riot! He even became incredibly interested in assisting his sister! He could not stay contained as he hopped over rows seeking strawberries! And, it was necessary that he confirmed each one he picked with Eric and myself! These were not so good! Each time I turned around, however, it was Ballerina eating the berries! With his loot...It was as if he was carrying gold! We were instructed to be extra cautious because the strawberries were "so awesome!"Definitely another fun day at the orchard...Soon to return again!

An Order to Love

I wrote this for AYC - Active Youth and Community College Station...a local magazine a dear friend of mine and her husband publish. While I write for the magazine each month, yet I typically do not post on this blog what I write for the magazine. However, the magazine is GREAT, and wanted to make a plug for it! I encourage all of you that live in this area to check it out!

Being that this is the month that we celebrate Valentines Day, I could not resist writing about some of my greatest lessons on love. One simply cannot help but to reflect on the big L word during this time of year when pink and red hearts, roses and cherubs adorn each place I visit.
As I think about it now, it was not until I was married had children that I truly came to understand love. Of course, I shallowly thought that I did before; yet, I had never really been in love before like I fell in love with them. I know now that I was completely naïve back then as to what it really meant to truly be in love.
Friends, I love my family beyond words, beyond comprehension and beyond myself. I love them when they do crazy things… I love them in spite of the times my son has peed off the back of the Wal-Mart cart, my daughter has chunked a $10 hair bow out the car window on Highway 6, and my other son let the cat out of the house that resulted in a $400 vet visit. I sill love them when they fight incessantly over video games I cannot stand, when they wet their bed every night for more than a week, and when they color with permanent marker all over my kitchen table. I even love them when they make obnoxious scenes in the doctor’s office over who will get a sticker and who will not, when they lie about spelling tests, when they adorn the entire house in 8 rolls of toilet paper, and hide in their closet and eat an entire pint of strawberries (stems included). I still love them…
And, I sometimes even love them more because of the crazy things they do…
I did not know one could love another this much!
On my wedding day my mother only offered me one piece of advice. As we stood in bride’s room as the guests arrived she said, “Loving from here on out will be the hardest thing you will ever do…It takes work – hard work – and it is not something that you will ever be able to just walk away from… But, always remember, there is an order to love when you have a family, and you have to get it right or your love will go all wrong…”
I was taken back by such a decisive comment. My mother is not typically one to make such. I must have looked at her completely dumfounded and bewildered. “Remember this order,” she demanded, “and you will have the greatest love…Love your Lord (whomever that might be) first. It was He that gave you life, knew you first, and who will ultimately have His hand in all you do. Second, you must love yourself. Before you were a wife, and before you were a mother, you were Taylor. Remember Taylor, and keep her - you - healthy and happy because your wellbeing and happiness will impact your love for husband and children more than anything. Then, love your husband. Simply, a joyous marriage breeds joyous children. And, lastly, love you children…”
Like most things mothers say, I listened intently and then filed her order to love away. This order to love was too much to wrap my mind around just moments away from walking down the aisle. Yet, since that day I have given it great thought time and time again.
The funny thing about my mom’s order to love it is that it is easiest to do it backwards. I know I often find myself so determined to make things good with my children that I neglect my husband. Then knowing my husband and I need time together, I will sacrifice time I has set aside for myself to be with him. Then as I struggle to find time for myself, the relationship I have with Him that I worship, regretfully, becomes an afterthought. And, I can attest that when I fall into this wicked order of love that my family, the ones I love the most, suffer in so many ways.
I challenge you in this Valentine’s season to think about the order in which you love. My mom’s order to love may not be right for all, but it does give great thought! And, may you and all those that you love have the happiest of Valentines!

An Easy Evening

When there are only 2 to get to bed...easy...Somehow, when we mix the older two in into things it all gets far more complicated! I just do not understand!

Finally 21!

So, this post should really be about my brother, Kason, and his birthday! (Happy 21st!) However, it is going to be about me...whining! I refuse to admit that he is 21. Yep, I will not ever! In my mind Kason will forever be in kindergarten...just the way I left him when I went to college!

All my disgruntledness aside because I feel so old, much of the family did celebrate with Kason and his friends at Northgate that evening! I did not have any pictures of the evening, so I stole these from Carla! :) Thanks soon-to-be sis!

The next day KK came over for dinner as we continued to celebrate!Eric is the cook in our house! I rarely participate. But, we do make our guests work. :)
Seared tuna with a jalapeno-mango salsa. Yum!
The kids, however, simply enjoyed some of the cookie cake GiGi made that Kason shared!

Happy birthday baby brother!

My smiles..Their tears...

I am back in business! The my USB ports suddenly started working again! I have no clue why, but I am not going to mess with a good thing! But, actually, we think they just might have dried out from the coffee incident! I am still going to get them replaced, but for now...

I wanted to share some of my smiles from last week...The first are pictures from my school's store. It is a positive behavior "thing" we are doing , and to say that it has been a hit would be an understatement! The intent is to recognize the students that are always doing the right thing with Bronco Bucks. ( You know the ones that are always overlooked...) The kids have delighted me beyond words with their excitement!

My principal is inside the store! I so wish I could show you some other pictures showing their excitement, but you can see the kids faces...When Daddy was sick one afternoon we hit the front yard to play! Even when the house was so grumpy, we were still smiling!Oh, except for Ballerina! She had a real tantrum! I just so appreciated G's amusement in the scene! He thought it was hilarious that Ballerina was having such a difficult time! He!

Wild Weeks

To say it has been a rough week in our house would be an understatement. We have literally been down and out all week! It truly seemed that if it was not one thing it was another.

It was a crazy week at school for the two of us. Things would seem very ordinary at points throughout our days, but at the most unexpected point they would then take a turn for the weird, "you have got to be kidding me," and the "did this just happen to be?" Never "bad"...just crazy!

Our kids were also off kilter it seemed. In fact, they were so off kilter that we received a phone call on Thursday to come pick G up from school because he was "running around the building out of control." (Then, when we got there we learned it was a substitute/teacher issue that really had nothing to do with G, and the the rest of the day/week was perfect once the teacher issue was addressed.)

Did I mention Thursday was also a full moon?

However, to top off this wild week ALL of us (and the roomie) had "the flu." I quote "the flu" for two reasons - 1, we all had flu shots, and 2, the doctor could not really pin down what was wrong with any of us. He just said, "I can tell you feel real bad!" (Thanks, doc. You are AMAZING!) So, I am not confident that it was REALLY "the flu!" Yet, we all felt horrible...and feeling horrible on top of crazy weird...well, it just makes for the cruddiest of weeks.

However, even in the midst of the wildest of weeks, there were moments of brightness and smiles! And, I have pictures to document this! Yet, there are no pics today...My dear friend spilled coffee on my computer during our administrator's meeting this morning and blew my USB ports. :)

Tournament at Home

We the spring soccer season with a soccer tournament at home! Yea! I know we were all geared up...and ready for the season to begin!
Sweet brothers...these two really like to be together!
Eric and I, however, are not so sure we are going to be so good at this soccer tournament stuff. We are great with all day SATURDAY; however, having your first game at 8 a.m. on a SUNDAY for a 10 year old...We just do not know that we agree that this this a good idea for kids. We had to do some real creative scheduling this Sunday to get our family to Sunday School/church (good thing the grandparents/aunt really helped out), and, yet, we were still not able to get Cannon there. Eric is a coach (Shoot, he has been a head varsity soccer coach!), and you know, we are ALL ABOUT sports; however, where is the line to be drawn? What message are we portraying to our children with our decisions? How do we best communicate the values we have worked to hard to establish in our house? What are priorities are we establishing? Even more, what does it say about the culture in which we live that this has become perfectly acceptable? If it is okay for our 10-year-old, would it be okay for our 8 or 4 year-old? At what age does it become appropriate? And, yet, we want to provide the very best opportunities for our children...athletic included...I think it just saddens us that this is a decision that has to be made, and no matter what we will be the bad guys for making it. Until next weekend...

Tired Brothers

Cannon and G were so tired that this is how they both slept...ALL NIGHT! I thought it was really sweet, but I could not help but to think that they had to be miserably uncomfortable!
