Steak and Grape

This weekend, we went here...G waited for a long time in a really hot line....while Ballerina and I played in dirty rocks. He finally made it to the front of the line, and he became quite nervous......but he finally made it to the top!He even slid down!We love to watch the trains when we are downtown. And, while we were there, we also played at one of our favorite places too!...until Ballerina had decided she had done enough playing for the day!The kids had a meltdown or two......but we quickly handled them.We enjoyed fine food......and drink!Ballerina did too!We then enjoyed each other's company and the awesome music late into the evening! (And, G documented it with his when he took our picture!)

It was a GREAT evening!

Totally Into Posing!

So Ballerina is totally into me taking her picture lately.

In fact, she asks for me to do it...and will then pose asking, "Cute Mommy?"Adorable!

His Powerful Punches

For over a year G has had a list of things he wanted to do once he "grew up." He wants to play on a "real soccer team," go to a school that is not a preschool, ride a school bus, color with permanent markers, and go to VBS...

This last week he checked one thing off his list.

VBS kicked-off last Monday.

Eric and I were super disappointed that we were not able to volunteer to work it because we are both working summer school, but we made every concession we could to be sure that G was able to attend!

All week long G sang about the power of the Lord...

"He's powerful..." (some hand motions that looked like punching accompanied the screaming of this beginning verse)

At first I would get onto him for the "fake punching" that he was doing, but when I was correcting him one time he said, "But, mom God is more powerful than I am punching...He can punch real hard...got it?"

While I still had a talk with him about "talking back" to Mommy, I also listened to his words.

The Lord IS powerful, and sometimes He DOES punch you...

And, sometimes he punches you over and over before you finally get the message. Sometimes he is forced to punch you to the ground before you finally listen. His punches often hurt like hell, and his punches are never easy to take.

But, there are times He needs to punch me...to remind me of His greatness, His mercy, His glory...and most of all of His power.

On Thursday we celebrated an incredible week of VBS, spent some awesome time eating ice cream and were in amazement of His power that a 4-year-old reminded us of.

Father's Day 2009

I write each month for an awesome local publication. This month I wrote about Father's Day. And, in honor of today, I would like to share my article...

Granted, this is supposed to be a Mom’s corner, and yes, I am aware of that. But, with Father’s Day quickly approaching, I simply could not resist the urge to write about and/or for all of the Dads that might be reading. And, with that, I further could not resist the urge to write about the greatest father I know…my husband!

So, let me fill you in on a little about him...By profession, he is an educator. He loves coaching, but because varsity sports suck a great deal of time, the fact that I was still working full-time and going to grad school, that he worked best with a particular group of students, and because he simply desired more time at home with the family, he has found his heart at the middle school level.

I knew him for years before we dated and married, and I pretty much could not stand him for most of that time. He is my foil, and I simply could not accept that anyone could approach things so differently than I. As I reflect now on why I really fell in love with him, it was not because of his stunning good looks, his charming personality, his witty sense of humor, his passion for life, his sense of adventure, his overwhelming spontaneity, his thought-provoking wisdom, his devout loyalty, or his love for his Lord. (I still did not like him despite all of these positive traits!) Rather, I fell in love with the way that he exemplifies, all of these things as a father.

I thought about telling you all that it is because of my awesomeness as a wife that my husband is such and incredible father, but, I humbly admit that it is because of his awesomeness as a husband that I am really a better mother.

There is an old cliché that behind every successful man there is a supportive wife, and while I cannot particularly disclaim that, I can offer that the opposite is equally true: Behind every successful woman there is a tremendously supportive husband.

Granted, I may not be all that “successful” to some, but I know with certainty that I would never be half the woman – much less mother - I am without him.

Perhaps I should explain...Some say that I have “issues.” I am extremely OCD, tend not to be graceful in stressful situations, etc. Take, for example, this evening…I turned my back while the kids were in the tub, and the 4-year-old fell not once, but twice, acquiring a black eye, a cut forehead and a gigantic knot on the back of his head. I, of course, overreact and fight the overwhelming urge to cry as guilt consumes me. I bellow for help, he walks in calmly, embraces the little one and me, and assures us both that all is really okay.

He also does all sorts of other things for the children and in support of me that make me a better mother, remind me daily why I fell in love with him, and affirm that he is truly an amazing dad… He always has chocolate milk ready for the little ones when they wake up, rarely grinches when he sorts the never-ending piles of socks, volunteers to make midnight trips to the store, and is solely in charge of cooking a gourmet dinner on a budget each evening. He helps the dramatic scheduling of 4 busy children between assisting with baths, studying spelling words, giving the dreaded “talk” to a 10-year-old, and cleaning the dinner dishes. He will always take time out to play a game of catch with the boys or teach them to tie a lure. He loves to read to the kids and delights in playing “babies” with his little girl. He changes diapers without ever being asked. He chuckles when cold, wet bottoms crawl into bed with us, and has often said his favorite thing about weekend mornings are the pile of kids watching cartoons in our bed.

More, he does all of these things with joy… reminding me by example and supporting me with his actions.

There is an old adage: “Anyone can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a Daddy.” To my husband, a Daddy, and to all of the other incredible men like him, I wish for you the very happiest Father’s Daddy’s Day…We mothers and our/your children love you more than you know!

I would also like to personally wish my incredible Dad (who I really, really wish I could have seen today) and my amazing father-in-law Happy Father's Day. And, I am honoring my grandfathers as well...These men, more than anyone or anything, have taught me what it means to love.

Oh, and please pick up a copy of the magazine!

Nothing 1/2 Way

What I know about Ballerina...She does nothing 1/2 way.

Nope.

Never.

When she dresses herself it involves jewelry, high-heeled shoes and multiple hair bows. When she wants to help clean she will spend hours with a wipe cleaning everything is sight. When she makes a mess, it is a horrid mess...

So, it stands to reason that she would eat with the same passion.

Oh, and does she eat...and eat...and eat...and eat...

In fact, I have received two reports ever about Ballerina having a "difficult" time at school, and BOTH reports indicated that she had been stealing food from other children at lunch! (Like mother like daughter!) Yep, as if the 6 chicken nuggets she had been given were not enough! Are you kidding me? She is not even 2 yet!

So, I found her in the freezer the other day, and she little one was helping herself to some ice cream. I, of course, was appalled that she would help herself to such a thing - again, she is not yet 2 - but, I also know enough about her determination and my patience to just "give-in" and let her do some things that I typically would not let an almost 2-year-old do!

Thus, she precedes to get the ice cream, a spoon, go outside (not to make a mess in the kitchen), take out her hair bows and then off the top of her bathing suit...UCK! She WANTED me to take this picture! She is posing!

The result - An ice cream eating adventure even I am jealous of!

Standing Still

There are moments when you just wish time would stand still...even if just for a second...
Thought I would share some of those moments...

In Celebration

This past weekend we went to celebrate the 4th birthday of one of my favorite little girls (and G's too)! The kids had such a good time! And, Daddy did too!
I think the only person that struggled even just a little was Ballerina!Come to find out, she is TERRIFIED of this big mouse.
I guess he is kind-of creepy! I mean, his name is Chickie! That is creepy enough for me!

Nonetheless, it was a wonderful birthday celebration!

Moving Day!

Moving day...well, moving DAYS have finally come! I would like to say that I have contributed greatly to the moving efforts, but, lets be honest, I have not done a darn thing other then 1/2 way man the children that are not the LEAST bit interested in moving!

All 4 our kids are simply more interesting in playing under the kitchen cabinets... In the cats' litter room...Or pouting on the counter in the living room...I have decided that I love this light fixture in the dining room...And , I really wish Kuppler, the cat that used to be Cambrey's and mine, even liked me a LITTLE! Shoot, I would settle for her to just NOT HISS at me!I am a little jealous that the cats like G...
However, the finniest part of the evening BY FAR is Ballerina's bossiness with her grandparents. She felt inclined to make K-Dan dance in circles and sing for quite some time, and then convinced him to lay on the entry hall floor! It was not long before she conned GiGi into playing the same game!
And, then she kept GiGi around to teach her how to pray! And, it is with that I pray that we get some decent sleep tonight! The two youngest have been having hell during the nights...bad dreams deluxe! Sad!
